So many #insulin4all posts involve heartbreaking stories of rationing and struggle to just stay alive. It is important for us to hear this, but it's more important for those of us with privilege and fridges full of insulin to speak out. It could so easily be us. 1/
To put the burden on people who are fighting for their very existence is the essence of privilege. Those of us with good insurance and good jobs have a duty to fight for those who don't. The price of insulin is an insane example of the broken American healthcare system. 2/
Though I worry about my daughter's future, I also know how blessed we are right now. Though it is a financial burden to pay for all that's required to keep her safe, our reality is that we are fine. We have everything we need and more. She is thriving and well-cared for. 3/
I know full well that could change tomorrow, with one swift kick from an angry racehorse or the loss of my job. But I don't blink when the pharmacist tells me the insulin is $1300 or the glucagon is $544. I know the money is in the bank and the deductible will soon be met. 4/
I know my wife and I can find a way to care for her. I know she's ok. But we as a society are not ok. We as a country are not ok. People are dying. People are scared. People are depending on the kindness of strangers and GoFundMe pages just to say alive. 5/
The facts are stunning. The price increases (1200% in 20 years!) are unbelievable. The data are there. The outrage from those directly affected is growing. But there is too much silence. There is too much complicity. There is too much lack of anger and compassion and advocacy. 6/
Until and unless those with privilege & power have the courage to speak out, & then turn their words into action, this will continue. It is one thing to be outraged when one is angry and scared, and quite another to fight for others whose circumstances could easily be yours. 7/
We cannot continue putting the burden to speak out and get to work on those directly affected and suffering. Their struggle to stay alive & keep their kids alive is enough. Those of us who don't worry have more of a duty than ever to get off our butts and get to work. Now. END.
