In 1996 NYPD officer Johnston pulled me over for failing to signal. After looking at me he called me a faggot and to told me to get out of my car. He referred to me as faggot several more times and said when he’s through I’ll never be allowed to drive again. While waiting at the
back of my car he summoned several other officers over (2 or 3 more squad cars had showed up.) He called me over to the group of laughing police officers and told me to hold out my hands to show everyone a “faggot’s nails”. (They were polished black.)

Pride Month traces its roots back to the Stonewall Uprising of 1969, when LGBTQ+ individuals stood up against discrimination and fought for their right to exist authentically. This pivotal moment in history ignited a flame that still burns brightly today. #Stonewall50
Pride emerged from the pain and struggle faced by LGBTQ+ people who were marginalized, oppressed, and denied their basic human rights. It stands as a symbol of resilience, a testament to the indomitable spirit that rises in the face of adversity.
Rainbow washing is defined as: “The act of using or adding rainbow colors and/or imagery to advertising, apparel, accessories, landmarks…in order to indicate progressive support for LGBTQ equality (and earn consumer credibility)—but with a minimum of effort or pragmatic result.”
During June, companies that engage in rainbow washing will transform into colourful hubs, with bright, rainbow versions of their logo on social media. Their advertising and feeds may “highlight” local members of the LGBTQI+ community, featuring them wearing their seasonal “Pride”
