I am no longer surprised to see how many U.K. commentators buy every word from Lega and Salvini about democracy because it fits their own story of ‘unelected eurocrats’
As I long ago decided to tweet about law - here’s some law. But first off: here’s the Italian constitution senato.it/documenti/repo…
about democratic legitimacy: the President (Mattarella) is elected by Parliament with regional representatives, Art. 83.
The President nominates ministers after proposal by the PM (Presidente del Consiglio). Art. 92
The President has the right not to nominate the person proposed. Mattarella, btw, was a judge on the Constitutional Court
There are at least three previous cases, according toItalian news, in which the President refused to nominate a minister proposed by the PM google.co.uk/amp/s/www.tpi.…
One involves Berlusconi proposing his personal attorney as minister of justice
The last one concerned Renzi’s nomination of a minister of justice.
So what were Mattarella’s reasons? He gave an excellent, thorough speech. The complete text is here: google.co.uk/amp/s/m.huffin…
Does he not tolerate eurosceptics in government? That’s bullshit. He did not contest Salvini in the home office.
He did say he wanted someone who can defend the Italian interest on the EU level in accordance with the program of the government
He says to leave the euro you must campaign on it. Not appoint someone who’ll lead to it by stealth or accident.
And let’s be honest - that’s absolutely correct. The spread Italian debt - German debt is exploding.Putting in the candidate proposed means heading for an Italian debt crisis.
It is only fair to ask the people to have a vote on it before embarking on a path that risks their future.
So what about democracy- isn’t Salvini all about clarity? Surprise surprise - he now claims he never said he wanted to leave the euro agi.it/politica/calen…
One last thing: impeachment. Art. 90. That requires high treason or ‘attentato alla costituzione’. My money is on ‘you must be kidding me’
If they still say it, they say it to win votes.
But the prize for worst comment on Italy goes to @SPIEGELONLINE . Instead of information they turned to stereotyping and insult. It takes balls for a left-leaning publication to make money off - quite frankly - racism.
And I say that as a fiscal conservative.
