[Thread] People are pretty pissed off at "Active Shooter" the steam game that allows you to simulate a nutjob on a shooting spree. It's marketing seems to be focusing of the wave of shooting sprees in the US to drum up controversy to manufacture hype for the game.
Firstly this is hardly new, even the first ever well known mass school shooting, Columbine, had it's own version released in 2005 called "Super Columbine Massacre" which used that whole edginess to drum up the same kind of controversy.
And then we also had "Hatred" which had all the stereotypes, a man in a trenchcoat who hated the world, even starting the game by saying "I am going to kill as many as possible before I die." Hmm yes, fantastic story telling.
And the media shrieked a lot about these games thinking it was going to inspire people to carry out the same acts in it and that it would turn gamers to violence. None of these games did that, because what these games all had in common, was they were all seriously fucking shit.
These games stirred up controversy during their development, and this in turn gave them free marketing because the media keep falling for this old trick, just for ultimately the game to be terrible, so terrible, that no one even played them.
Just don't fall for the edgy marketing, it has been done before, and almost always the game gets released, gets panned by reviews for being fucking terrible and then it fades away into nothingness, and if you actually look at Active Shooter, it looks fucking awful.
Basically, stop falling for this old marketing trick, the devs are hoping for the media to kick off about it, it's an old trick that devs use to turn the media into their very own marketing team, and it doesn't cost them a penny.
