This decision is a very big deal not only because it allows the @SummerZervos defamation case to go forward (barring a @realDonaldTrump appeal to #SCOTUS), but it also cements the propriety of the major new suit by @NewYorkStateAG being brought in state—rather than federal—court.

The question is whether a sitting President can be subject to civil suit in _state_ court—a question on which #SCOTUS reserved judgment in Clinton v. Jones in 1997.

So far, the NY state courts have said "yes."

Here's the (summary) order from the New York Court of Appeals. As @JohnQAdams11 points out, this is definitely _not_ a merits decision.

But if you truly believe the President is immune in such cases, this might be enough of a basis to seek a stay from #SCOTUS (I'm skeptical.)
