I understand why people like @JohnRentoul are minded to support May's "deal". They wish to cleave (like all of us) to the illusion that we are led by grown-ups who know what they are doing and who have a coherent plan. But we need to grow up and face reality ourselves.

The first thing to note is that May doesn't have a "deal" or anything approaching one. She has a Withdrawal Agreement. This provides
1) a commitment for us to pay ~£40bn to the EU;
2) gives us a "transition" period

3) puts our own expats largely at the mercy of individual host countries in return for us being able to: strip EU citizens here of certain rights, put them at the mercy of our Home Office (in all its mendacity & misanthropy); and chuck them out if they stay abroad too long.

1/ Let me try and explain the issue with EU citizens in the event of no deal - the issue that @carolinenokes, Minister of State for Immigration, got so wrong:
2/ Currently, if you apply for a job or try to rent a house or register with a GP, you will probably be asked to show a passport or provide similar proof of ID. If such a check establishes that you are British or an EEA citizen, you've passed.
3/ The UK government is currently setting up a system for ~3.8 million EU citizens (they haven't yet decided what happens to Swiss, Norwegian and other EEA citizens who are not EU citizens) to apply for "settlement" - ie permission to continue living in the UK, at £65 a pop.

@David_Goodhart Don't get me wrong, I accept that politics is the art of the possible & that (like the man going to Dublin) we have to set off from where we are rather than from where we'd like to set off from.
I also accept that we treat the other 1/3 of our "2/3 society" with v little "respect" - something that is the result of politics I've never voted for, much less "rigged the vote" for, but for which many of the 1/3 do vote.
I understand why many feel aggrieved and blame their plight on foreigners.

2/ @YvetteCooperMP's face says it all. Utter disbelief that the UK Govt's plan is to create two indistinguishable classes of EU citizens with two different sets of rights in case of no deal Brexit which will automatically lead to discrimination from employers.

As people across KY are voting in the #KYPrimary, felony disenfranchisement has left a large number of Kentuckians from casting a ballot today. (a thread, I've never done one before)
According to a 2016 report by @SentencingProj, 9.1% of Kentuckians are disenfranchised because of felony convictions. This amounts to 312,000 people unable to vote.
Additionally, KY has the highest rate of African-American felony disenfranchisement in the U.S., clocking in at 26.2%. Meaning more than one in five, or 70,000, African Americans in KY is disenfranchised. Here's that report: goo.gl/HPFKaD
