Today @OpenPriv officially announced the first draft & prototype of Cwtch, an extension of the Ricochet protocol that provides asynchronous, offline and multi-party metadata resistant messaging.

It took along time to get to where we are now, and it is only just the beginning.
@OpenPriv It is important to say that this really is just the beginning. If you read the announcement you will see a long laundry list open questions that we don't know the answers to yet.

We want this to be a start of a conversation about how we build the next generation of tools.
@OpenPriv Metadata is everywhere in the current internet. And law enforcement and intelligence agencies have never been shy about proclaiming it's usefulness "we kill people based on metadata"

Metadata marginalizes, it's dangerous, it literally gets people killed. It needs to end.
@OpenPriv Cwtch leverages the peer-to-peer properties of Tor onion services just like Ricochet. It uses these properties to bootstrap secure, private space on known, untrusted, infrastructure.

This allows cool stuff like e2e encrypted, metadata resistant, asynchronous group chat.
@OpenPriv
@OpenPriv Our Roadmap for Cwtch over the next few months involves a number of different threads:

* Building out a mobile app
* Conducting UX studies
* More research into the open problems
@OpenPriv I also plan to explore the design patterns behind metadata resistant apps more:

* What does a metadata resistant dating app look like?
* What about metadata resistant twitter?

How do we build systems from the ground up that give people real consent over their data?
@OpenPriv We are so grateful to everyone so far who are helping us achieve our mission of building tools for people and for marginalized communities, tools that cannot be used against them, tools that give them control.

Please help us continue this work:
