The sentiment that Democrats are revolting against Nancy Pelosi has been floating around the last few days. Let's take a look at the associated Twitter activity.
We downloaded recent tweets containing the phrase "revolt against Pelosi" and filtered out the retweets of @tburages's tweet commenting on the phenomenon, leaving us with 1582 tweets from 1471 accounts.
172 of these 1471 accounts (11.7%) have default profile pics. This is unusually high - most datasets we look at have somewhere in the neighborhood of 3% - and likely indicates bot activity.
Testing these accounts for 24/7 activity and use of common automation services yields 26 accounts. This is far lower than the number of default pic accounts, but the majority of those don't have enough tweets to perform this test meaningfully.
The first recent "revolt against Pelosi" tweet (June 25th) comes from an account that does not appear to be automated, and links to a video from the Washington Free Beacon.
The next "revolt against Pelosi" tweet is a day later and links to a Fox News article (Fox appears to have borrowed the concept from the Free Beacon). This tweet is from @allnewspolitics, an automated account with seven followers. It also appears to be the beginning of the trend.
Some of the automated accounts with "revolt against Pelosi" tweets are quite high-volume. Let's take a quick look at a couple of them.
First up: @McGMaryland. This account has been around for several years and has 939K tweets. Most automated accounts we analyze tend to pick a single app or automation service, but @McGMaryland uses eight (there are also potentially organic tweets posted via website/phone app.)
One more: @AIIAmericanGirI, an account with 600K tweets which makes the amusing claim not to be a "Russian bot" on its profile. They're definitely not being honest about the second part unless they literally never sleep.
Interestingly, all of @AIIAmericanGirI's tweets are posted via the Twitter website. Combined with the round-the-clock activity, this strongly suggests that the operator of the accounts is automating the posting of tweets via the website.
Thanks @ZellaQuixote for the lead and assistance with this thread.
Footnote: it's always fun when the automated accounts documented in these threads retweet the portion of the thread in which they are documented. Hi, @McGMaryland!
Footfootnote: LoL.
Once more, with (automated) feeling :)
Footnote cubed: The @AIIAmericanGirI account referenced earlier in this thread has, for the moment, disappeared from Twitter.
Looks like the owner of @McGMaryland finally noticed it was retweeting, um, unintended material.
One more addendum to this thread: the @AIIAmericanGirI account mentioned earlier now has deleted almost all its tweets (previously 600K), perhaps in an effort to hide the evidence that the account was automated (and likely violating TOS due to the automation method). Interesting.
Also, they got the year of Independence Day wrong. #YouHadOneJob
