Oh, hey - I took a week off from Twitter and came back to find people arguing over the politics of the 1920s Klan.
Just to add to @KevinMKruse's thread briefly - while the nomination of Al Smith by the Democrats in 1928 was the final straw for many Klan members, most (at least at high levels) had also supported the reelection of Coolidge in 1924.
While the Democratic Party famously tore itself apart over the Klan in 1924, it's worth remembering that the eventual consensus nominee, John W. Davis, condemned the Klan on the campaign trail, and challenged Coolidge to do the same.
Coolidge remained largely closemouthed on the issue, leaving Republican VP candidate Charles Dawes to pick up the slack.
To Dawes' credit, he denounced the Klan in a speech in Maine - even after the Republican National Committee advised against it, and the state committee had banned any talk of the KKK.
The only campaign in 1924 really left untainted by flirting with Klan support was progressive Bob LaFollette, and even then there were issues.
Which is a long way of saying, shockingly, that once again Dinesh D'Souza has no idea what he's talking about.
