Forking OSS has historically been frowned upon. It's always been the custom, an unwritten rule. And there have been few financial incentives (if any) to fork a project. But that was prior to the advent of #Bitcoin. Now anybody can create a scarcity token and reap financial gains. 
That's why it's not always easy to distinguish honest projects from mere scammy ones.
