I was contacted by a journalist about this today because someone in Turkey with almost a million followers tweeted out a version of this meme that somehow manages to be even more wrong
The confusion evidently comes from a New Scientist article that makes somewhat misleading claims based on a 2007 study whose speculative results have been disputed in the literature several times since then. And then someone stuck an image of a dark nebula to it, for fun.
The more-wrong version includes the irrelevant dark nebula pic, but adds spooky dark tendrils to it. 🙄
Wikipedia has a decent discussion of the "supervoid" thing. See: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CMB_cold_… Basically, we see a weird pattern in the background light left over from the Big Bang, and one explanation for it is that there's a giant void (a region of space with little matter).
A supervoid may or may not be the correct explanation for the pattern -- there are ongoing debates. (It looks kind of unlikely to me.) But if such a supervoid exists, it's not 100% empty, does not completely lack radiation, and certainly does not come with a spooky photo.
I don't blame people for not being up to date on the latest cosmological results, or for sometimes sharing things that get the science wrong. If you have a big following, though, you really should own up to it when corrected by experts.
