The Tory campaign claims that Keesmaat's plan is the same as what he supports. Hmmm. Let's look at the Issues page on Tory's site: johntory.ca/Issues and Keesmaat's plan: jenniferkeesmaat.com/keesmaat_netwo…
First up is the DRL. Of course they both support it. The difference is the timeframe. Also it's important to remember that 4 years ago, SmartTrack would make the need for a DRL vanish into the mist. Also Keesmaat is very strong on taking the DRL up to Sheppard.
Next is the Eglinton West LRT from "Downtown to Etobicoke". The last time I looked, Mount Dennis is not downtown. This claim sounds like a bad editing job on the original SmartTrack that went from downtown to Pearson. It doesn't now.
King Street Pilot: Tory supports this now, although isn't clear on making it permanent. He dragged his feet when it was first proposed and had to be convinced by others, including Keesmaat. Hardly leadership on the issue.
SmartTrack Liberty Village Station: Both Keesmaat and Tory support this, although it will probably be a very, very expensive station. Trains will stop every 15 minutes, and travel time saving will be offset by wait time (not to mention access given its location).
Both candidates are wrong on those ST stations, but for different reasons. Keesmaat doesn't appear to want to pick a fight on some of these, and keeps the Finch station which is very contentious in its neighbourhood.
Scarborough Subway and Eglinton LRT: The SSE does not make sense as a one-stop line. If you're going to build a subway, have it actually serve people. The plan approved by Council looks nice but costs far more than originally claimed thanks to the SSE. No money left for LRT.
That whole Scarborough "compromise" was a bait and switch game for which, frankly, Keesmaat should be embarrassed. At least she's now backing the subway+LRT combo for what that's worth.
That's it for Tory transit issues. No mention of the Waterfront, Jane, surface transit improvements. Also no sense that Tory feels any need to accelerate and lead on projects.
Both candidates are silent on the huge list of "unfunded" and "below the line" projects which make the transit deficit much deeper than is acknowledged. One big piece is the renewal of the BD subway (Line 2) which is integral to the SSE scheme.
A major side-effect of having so many projects not on the official list is that DoFo can tell people it's cheaper to take over the subway than it really will be. A big issue for candidates is paying to keep today's system running, not just expansion.
Contrary to one wag's prediction yesterday, there are no Swan Boats proposed by either candidate. Here endeth the lesson.
Postscript: Neither candidate talks about the deadlock produced by asking for tripartite city-prov-fed funding which gives any "partner" an effective veto. This model must change to get project-based funding from willing partners.
After all, Doug Ford is taking exactly that approach to cut the meddlesome city council out of the loop on subway planning. City should do the same and not count on QP for a share of every project.
