In the 80s, there was no simple way to kill off the SDP. The votes they took from Labour kept Thatcher in Number 10.

Today we can stop a split with a single press release.

If true, this is an unprecedented and historic humiliation for Theresa May. After two years of negotiations with the EU, she is not even prepared to let MPs vote on her deal.
The truth is that it's unlikely any form of Brexit could command a majority in this House. It is impossible to deliver on the 2016 referendum result because it was based on lies, false promises, and fantasy. No more negotiations in Brussels will change this fact.
Our politics is now well and truly stuck. The way to unblock it is to go back to the public with a People's Vote, which will either offer a mandate for a specific form of Brexit, or to remain in the EU.

This report confirms the grim truth we already knew. The Home Office failed to protect Windrush citizens' "rights to live, work and access services" and "discharged its duty of care." It is a national disgrace.

The Home Office ignored warnings and recommendations for years. Rather than admitting its wrongs, it subjected British citizens to the brutal Hostile Environment. We still don't know how deep this goes. So far just 18 have had apologies.
Even after the scandal broke, the Home Office has shown a "surprising lack of urgency to identify other groups that may have been affected." The department is more interested in covering its own back than uncovering the truth.

GST thread. Stay with me: This govt wont share real GST data. Instead we fall for its stupid press releases every month. They mean near zilch. This is what the central govt has really collected by August. Net of refunds and settlement - the only way GST nos should be read.
It is erroneous to merely compare total Rs 1 lakh per month target for states+centre with press releases which do not account for how IGST was settled each month. So, these cant tell what the Centre really got. This table shows how erratic IGST settlement has been.
Then you got to look at states and their revenue separately. Here is a chart of how state revenues are doing. After a year some are doing quite badly. Why? Ask.

The idea that the SDP/Alliance split the "Labour vote" in the 1980s and kept Thatcher in Number 10 is one of the enduring fantasies of the British Left. And like all such fantasies, it encourages bad political choices. 1/6 [THREAD]
First problem: it's a comforting myth that stops Lab thinking about its own failings. Instead of asking why barely 1/4 of the electorate in 1983 backed a party in the grip of the hard Left, it blames defeat on traitors & quislings - always the favoured response of that wing. 2/6
Second: it makes the remarkable assumption that voters who backed the SDP "belonged" to Labour; that for another party to make a case & win their votes was an act of political larceny. That sense of outraged entitlement has never served the Left well. 3/6

#Today's story to #EndFamilySeparation Four months ago, Dad and 4-month-old entered at the Texas/Mexico border and requested #asylum. Dad and child were immediately separated and the baby put in ORR custody. #FamiliesBelongTogether
Dad was detained in a #Texas detention center where @RAICESTEXAS consulted. Dad accepted a deportation to be quickly reunited w/ his infant child. However, the Dad was deported & NOT his child. The now 8-month-old baby has been in ORR custody for 4 months. #EndFamilySeparation
The Mom and Dad now have once weekly Skype calls with their 8-month-old baby. That's right, folks. They Skype with an infant. #EndFamilySeparation #FamiliesBelongTogether

As April 20 approaches, questions about "high costs" of 4/20 are coming up again. I have been looking into issue of @VancouverPD policing costs for public events in @CityofVancouver, and I've discovered there's a much bigger story here which needs to be discussed. 1/X #vanpoli
Soaring @VancouverPD bills have been forcing @CityofVancouver's public events into bankruptcy for years. For instance, St Patrick's Day Parade was forced to cancel in 2016 & '17 because they couldn't afford city's high bills, mainly for policing. 2/X news1130.com/2017/12/07/van…
Another example is Vancouver's Santa Claus Parade, which almost shut down in 2017 because they couldn't afford soaring costs of policing. They were saved at the last minute by a big corporate sponsor. 3/X

Thread. A few thoughts from me following the fabulous @chrisdc77 thread on science and press releases. (for context) I run a Press Office but was once a scientist so here goes... 1/n
In my work we run things so that scientists 'own' their press releases. It is their work, they put the long hours in, they care about it, they are best placed to help engage others with it 2/n
...but, and it's a big but...scientists must seek out, listen to, and incorporate professional advice and assistance from their Communications teams and Press Office staff. We're experts too! 3/n
