This is false and harmful. It projects “good” programmers as people who do it for fun: competence has nothing to do with this, and plenty of programmers with families see it as a job, and they are excellent at what they do.
People who program a lot for fun without getting paid are basically privileged ("I am rich so I don't have to work for money"). Lots of talented, competent people can't do this because jobs or kids or friends take up their time: doesn't mean they aren't good!
Just because I am good at programming doesn't mean I have to spend every waking minute doing so. Folks can choose to have a healthy social life and program only during their jobs: this is normal and healthy!

Some believe that writing a scientific paper is a dry process, devoid of creativity.

Nothing could be further from the truth!

Writing a paper is more like making a movie! If you are the lead author/prof, you are the director of the movie.
Just as with a movie, a scientific paper starts with a vision. Not all the details have been worked out, but a high-level idea is there, and you are excited about the final product once it is done.

You then start putting together the paper/movie piece by piece.
Just as a director works with lots of people to make the movie, there is often a team of graduate students working with the lead author/prof to create the paper. Leading this team correctly is part of realizing the vision.

This is an amazing series of interviews of successful professors by younger professors. There are all sorts of interesting tidbits and advice in here. Highly recommend all junior profs read this!
To highlight some of the interesting tidbits: (my paraphrasing) "You should fight like a dog. You have fought so hard to get here, don't give up now!"

On grant writing: "The motivation is the most important part. If they like your vision and get why you are excited, they will overlook many technical details"

A quick thread on the @reportbee Remote Research Fellowship 2018! The goal was to encourage more indian students to pursue research. We wanted to make sure it was on their radar as a possible option after undergrad.
@reportbee ReportBee would sponsor one student for a remote research internship. The internship would last for a year, giving the student time to meaningfully contribute to a project. The stipend would help the student allocate time for the project.
@reportbee We received applications from 27 universities all over India! This was super encouraging since this was the first year we were trying this. Most students wanted to apply for a Masters degree, some wanted to do a PhD.

I was born to two second generation Jamaican parents. Grew up on a council estate in Harpurhey, Manchester, an area that is both poor and overwhelmingly inhabited by white people.

Good morning, babies. So, yesterday, among everything else that happened, Trump gave what probably should be regarded as a major (if short) speech on national security, to officially lay out his plan to Congress.
I'm going to get into that speech, which has a few interesting features that make it different from a typical Trump speech. It's been compared to his campaign rally speeches more than a normal policy speech, but it's actually perhaps his clearest, most policy-focused speech yet.
