This is false and harmful. It projects “good” programmers as people who do it for fun: competence has nothing to do with this, and plenty of programmers with families see it as a job, and they are excellent at what they do.
People who program a lot for fun without getting paid are basically privileged ("I am rich so I don't have to work for money"). Lots of talented, competent people can't do this because jobs or kids or friends take up their time: doesn't mean they aren't good!
Just because I am good at programming doesn't mean I have to spend every waking minute doing so. Folks can choose to have a healthy social life and program only during their jobs: this is normal and healthy!
