Life comes at you in ways that you never imagined, sometimes preparing for it helps to reduce the shock.
I’m not one who likes to prepare for uncertainty but I found out that those who do actually survive more when life happens.
Having the mindset that some things are out of your control. That they depend on outer factors, helps.

Be rest assured that it can’t always be your fault, so quit the self blaming.
Life happening could come in the form of being broke, having financial freedom helps during this time. Instead of feeling hopeless and spending even more on unnecessary things, sit and write down a financial plan for yourself (this is for those who have an income)
Focus on saving. It’s the foundation of building wealth too. When you know you have some money in the bank for rainy days, you’ll sleep better at night. You’ll never get to rely on somebody else to fix an unexpected expense. That’s a step towards financial freedom.
When life happens learn how to survive, I would use one common experience which is heartbreak. When people get heart broken it affects them deeply, some loose themselves, some even commit suicide. One of the most important skill in life is to be adaptive.
Adapt through any situation. This is no jokes, it’s easier said that done but if you follow these it would help you.
Have a positive mindset through any situation no matter how painful.
Remember who you are, not how they made you feel.
Be in the right place with positive energy.
You will find out that at the end you will be the one helping people get through their heartbreak or any shocking experience.
I think having a life plan could also help before or when life happens. “I know man proposes and God disposes” but this saying isn’t enough for you not to have a plan. Describe how you want each area of your life to look to go. Then break each category down into goals...
....and then into specific step. Just have a plan even if it might not work.
How about a list of things you should think about or get done over the next few months?
Finally, before following any of these advice have a SWOT analysis of yourself.
What are your STRENGTHS?
What are your WEAKNESSES?
What are your OPPORTUNITIES?
What are your THREATS?
