SKY sources: BMW to shut its Mini factory for a month immediately after Brexit - No Deal contingency
/1 Unions have negotiated a week on full pay and three weeks on “banked pay” for the post Brexit-day shutdown which is being attributed to disruption “in the event of a No Deal Brexit”
/2 Industry sources have expressed fears of an effective closure of the Channel Tunnel immediately after a No Deal Brexit lasting two weeks, and then it taking a further two weeks’ emergency diplomacy to reestablish free flowing supply lines
/3 It is its annual shutdown that has been brought forward from the summer - a first - at considerable expense..my understanding from multiple sources is it is hoped that any disruption will clear up within 4 weeks - but that is judgement on any actual No Deal situation wont last
/4 And again for those saying this is made up - was announced to workers today.... and unions yesterday

Letwin almost emotional there - bit between tooth on stopping No Deal will vote for Cooper amendment, said as former Cabinet Office minister responsible for resilience - essentially UK not ready for No Deal. This said as a loyalist who fought hard to get A50 Bill through for PM

EU sources say there will be “no summit” and there are “no actual talks”, some discussions on reassurances. Another diplomatic source tells me even those will not come before the vote next week. /1
Still not entirely sure whether the Meaningful Vote debate that resumes tomorrow will be the continuation of the one curtailed last month or a new one. Former more likely. Would have to make special provision for previous speakers to speak again /2
Tory MPs who attended the Downing St drinks were expecting a bit of a rousing unity speech from PM - surprised there wasn’t one at all even “none of you will be back here” type cajoling. On the way out none I spoke to had changed mind.

1. One recurrent feature of modern media is that it is only ever capable of dealing with one story at a time and according to its own priorities and values. The big story, had we a remotely adult media, should have been the Commission's no deal contingency plans. #Brexit thread.
2. Instead we're getting endless blether about Corbyn. There's been some coverage of the Commission's plans but the media now thinks that story is done and dusted. It is now old news, and they won't revisit it until after Christmas, if at all.
3. Without adequate scrutiny it will simply pass into the ERG armory of deceptions, whereby they will use to to claim we can have a "managed no deal". This is masterful propaganda - turning a negative into a positive.

1) Get ready for a big #Brexit week this week - in Brussels and U.K.
2) European Commission decides today whether or not to delay 2 awaited publications scheduled for Wednesday appearance: paper on future EU-UK relationship and paper on stark EU intentions in case of no deal
3) These 2 papers could be used as carrot/sticks in negotiations but there’s a nervousness in EU circles to get tone right at this delicate coming-to-end-game state of #Brexit proceedings and not to be seen as bullying (remember Salzburg??)

1. Today in #Brexit tedium: You all saw the Barnier tweet reiterating that a Canada+++ is available and has been from the beginning. The ultra brexiters have taken that to mean an FTA plus whatever fiction they want tacked on to it.
2. They are dishonestly claiming this as a vindication of their position, conveniently ignoring that the EU will not agree to begin talks on any such agreement unless the UK signs up to an NI backstop. The EU is entirely consistent on this.
3. The ultas claim that a Canada+++ deal where they get to define what the plusses mean means that we don't need a backstop, Two problems here. The EU won;t agree to it and secondly, the details of their proposal has the same basic flaw as Chequers which the EU already declined.

1. So I *could* do another thread on why the EEA is the best option but then I'll get a torrent of whining from ultra #Brexit idiots. So let's just cut to the chase. Yes, the EEA is suboptimal. Tough...
2. Leavers have whinged about every single alternative suggestion - suggestions which have been widely panned not only by leavers but also by Brussels. That's because these convoluted workarounds are trying to deliver the impossible.
3. The fact leavers can't bring themselves to admit is that regulatory harmonisation is a fact of life if you want frictionless trade. There is no cake and eat it option and the EU will make no special exceptions for the UK. Why should it?
