Vince Cable about to make the leaders speech at Lib Dem conference bbc.co.uk/iplayer/live/b…
He looks knackered.
"Brexit is not inevitable. It can and it must be stopped." Pleasant to hear a party leader say that.
"There are millions of people out there who haven't given up the fight and nor will we."
Says Tory Brexiters are divided into True Believers, Chancers and Conscripts.
He literally couldn't seem to get the word 'erotic' out his mouth, thank God, and seemed to accidentally say 'exotic'.
True Believers will take any Brexit, on any basis, and are full of excitement at the prospect. Chancers, Like Johnson and Gove, based their decision on the flick of a coin.
"Boris Johnson is a real danger to Britain. He behaves more like Trump every day."
Singles out lack of interest in truth and disregard for women. "The twins of the rabid right." Not a bad line.
Conscripts pursue "damage limitation as a high principle... they fantasise over something called 'frictionless convergence'."
"When we feel sorry for the country's prime minister something is seriously wrong." This is actually quite a good speech, I just wish he looked like he was going to stay awake through it.
Cable praises Corbyn for allying with Lib Dems on Iraq and civil liberties in the past, but condemns him for using thugs to defend his reputation now he's opposition leader.
If Corbyn won't support a Peoples Vote "Labour members should wave him goodbye"
"Brexit still appears to many hearts, if not many minds." Sensible caveat.
Cable says immigration hasn't depressed wages, but there is "perception it has. Says we need to target funding at housing to address that.
Says he'll never waver in his commitment to call out racism because he faced it himself when he had a mixed-race marriage. But. "To dismiss all Brexit voters as racists is simply wrong and completely counter-productive."
God leaders' conference speeches are so long. So painfully, mind-numbingly long.
You'll be pleased to hear that Cable will be bringing detailed proposals for the Individual Learning Account to the spring conference.
"The two big parties have changed from broad churches into intolerant cults. And those who question the faith are unwelcome."
Pleased that's over. He's right about pretty much everything but I found it quite a drag.
