Following today's National Accounts update from @ONS, we've now officially faced the slowest decade of growth since the one ending in 1952. By Q2 2018, the 10-year average rate of annual growth in GDP per person had fallen to just 0.4%
Putting the current cycle in longer context, it's clear that we've suffered from both a deeper downturn than usual and a significantly more sluggish recovery
Indeed, in not one of the quarters of the last decade has annual growth in GDP per person topped the pre-crisis average rate of 2.4%
Of course, it's not just the UK economy that's been hit - other advance economies have suffered too. The UK experience stands out not so much in terms of the depth of the initial downturn, but more the slow pace of initial recovery and a more recent relative slowdown post-ref
At the heart of this is the post-crisis productivity growth collapse. Again a feature across countries, but one where the UK stands out. Growth is back, but at a slower rate than we're used to, making today's (2nd successive) reduction in business investment all the more worrying
In terms of living standards, we're now looking at an unprecedented pause in household income growth. A decade on from the crisis, disposable income per person is just 2.5% higher than it was. At the same stage after the 1980 and 1990 recessions it was 33% and 29% higher
Spending initially fell further than income as households cut back to deal with existing debts and protect themselves from future uncertainty. Spending growth has outstripped income growth more recently however, though that strategy can't continue indefinitely
Worth remembering that things are at least heading in the right direction in the main (i.e. we're growing again), but the extent to which everything has changed post-crisis provides a chilling backdrop for the non-Halloween Budget on 29 October
