After Kevin Cramer characterized #MeToo as "victimization," I thought it'd be helpful to look into Kevin's backstory.

Turns out this is one of the least misogynistic things he's ever said.

(2) Cramer made national news with his hot take on Kavanaugh.

“My point was that there was no type of intercourse or anything like that...that nothing happened in terms of a sexual … event, beyond, obviously, the attack... Even if it’s all true, does it disqualify him?"

Yikes.
(3) Because there was no penetration, Cramer argues, there was no assault. And really, who hasn't been drunk and tried to rape a woman. Am I right? 👀

This is a guy endorsed & supported by GW Bush and Trump because of course, he is.
(4) Cramer dropped this gem about the women in Congress in 2017

"Did you notice how poorly several of them were dressed? There's no question there's a disease associated with the notion that women would wear bad-looking white pantsuits in solidarity with Hillary Clinton."
(5) So what does Cramer do when he's not policing women's bodies and their clothing?

Oh, I'm so glad you asked. He's comparing Heitkamp to an adulteress for not being loyal to Donald Trump. Yeah. You heard that right.
(6) “Here’s the good news about Donald Trump: Most of the time, he’s for North Dakota, and that’s my point where I’ve heard her say, ‘Gee, I voted with him 55% of the time. Can you imagine going home and telling your wife, ‘I’ve been faithful to you 55% of the time’?”
(7) I'm sure there are plenty more comments we could dig up pointing out Cramer's misogyny. It seems to be a well that'll never run dry.

But really, North Dakota? You can do better than this.
And so can America.

(2) First off, there are not a lot of rules about declaring national emergencies. And sadly, even in America, this executive power is rarely checked by Congress.

It's a tactic that has been used by both authoritarians and democracies around the world.

(3) While Trump can declare a national emergency at his discretion, he can't invoke one indefinitely without Congressional approval. And there are some limits to how this authority can be used to deploy troops & use funding.

I was out for a walk this afternoon in my neighborhood, tromping through half ploughed icy sidewalks when something happened that happens way way too often.

A red pickup truck with a big engine pulled up alongside of me.

(2) At first I didn’t think much of it, but I did look up and glare at the driver. As a woman walking alone, even in the middle of the day, I am hyper aware of my surroundings.

I feel uncomfortable wearing headphones to listen to music when in public for exactly this reason.
(3) The driver was a young to middle aged white male and his truck was loud. He coasted along beside me for nearly half a block before stopping.

I was annoyed but shrugged it off. Maybe he wasn’t sure where he was going and was trying to get a closer look at the house numbers.

1) Understand your audience.

If you speak out about sexual abuse, know that there will certainly be survivors of sexual violence in the room. The probability that you can speak about sexual violence without engaging the trauma history of someone listening is just about zero.
How would a victim hear your words? In what ways would it comfort them? Hurt them? It might be wise to run a draft of your comments by a survivor of sexual violence and/or someone with another kind of #MeToo history.

One of the many disheartening things about the media/social media/real life response to recent #metoo stuff is quite how many people think that anything short of conviction of an alleged sex offender means alleged victims lied. Wee crime corr thread. 1/
2/ I know internet partisans like their world to be oh-so-simple and black and white, goodies and baddies. But I guess most of us know the real world is not like that? There can be a lot of gray out there.
3/ There is a whole range of behaviours which fall under sexual misconduct or offending. Sometimes these fall below a test under which they might be suitable for criminal court proceedings. That does not mean either alleged victims - or perpetrators - have "lied".

between TERFs telling me I'm a straight man because I've always dated women, and trans-inclusive cis lesbians telling me I'm bi because I've hooked up with men in the past, is there any identity more carefully guarded than that of the trans lesbian
I think the issue is that these are younger cis lesbians who had the privilege of growing up in a world where lesbian identity is acknowledged and understood, they've always had a framework for their feelings
they've forgotten their history, they don't realize that the framework they depend on was established through queer politics, by those who experienced the same identity but had to carve a space for it through trial and error
