Alright, a little thread on Where We Are Now™. In a less than 36-hour span:

1) @BernieSanders spoke on the march of kleptocratic authoritarianism—as seen of late in Brazil, where @jairbolsonaro took the plurality of votes in the first round of elections:
@BernieSanders @jairbolsonaro 2) The @GOP — the political mouthpiece of the Trump administration — spoke out to … :checks notes: … attack Sanders for condemning authoritarians:
3) The WSJ editorial board — a voice of the same company that controls the GOP-aligned, for profit super PAC known as Fox News — *endorsed* the authoritarian for Brazil's presidency!
Not to overuse the already teetering on overused Maya Angelou quote … but when people try to tell you who they are, believe them the first time.

Far be it from me to question by Republicans have chosen in this moment to side _with_ rising authoritarians — but they have!
I’ll recap this, since my mind was in a few different places before, and I got wordy:

1) @BernieSanders blasts about kleptocratic authoritarianism … sanders.senate.gov/newsroom/press…
2) The Republican Party … blasts Sanders:
3) The WSJ ed board — a leading voice for the American right — wades into an overseas election to *endorse* an authoritarian.
Why is the reflex among key institutions of the American right to *embrace* authoritarianism — rather than extol Americans’ supposed democratic values?

I don’t know that; you’d have to ask them. But let’s not whistle right past what they’re doing here.
