After the IPCC report on 1.5 degrees, there has been a flurry of "what you can do to avoid the climate crisis" articles and fact boxes in the media, which is great. However...
most of the "tips for saving the climate" reduce us to consumers. Personal consumption decisions are important but making your voice heard is easily a thousand times importanter.
If these climate tips mention any kind of advocacy it's usually limited to voting and such. Which is important. But consider that these articles are read by CEOs, portfolio managers, chief engineers, political advisors and all the other people who make all the big decisions.
Every decision by a Fortune 500 company to source renewable power, a political party to incorporate phase out of coal into their platform, a bank to exclude fossil fuel financing came because at least a few people inside the organisation were tirelessly advocating for the better.
Making "how to help the climate" fact boxes about taking the train to work and having fried tofu instead of bacon risks diverting from the fact that collectively we have more power in our professional lives and networks than as consumers.
So the #1 tip I would have in these articles would be to spend at least an hour or two per week leveraging your professional position, network and skills, as well as personal network and skills to reduce emissions.
Do try that fried tofu though.
