A lot has been said about the Scarborough subway. The topic has been at issue in the Toronto-St. Paul’s race as of late. In the four years that I have been reporting on it, there has often been attempts at revisionist history. I’ve tried very hard to keep it straight /1
I spent a long time talking to Mihevc about his record on the subway. It is absolutely true that today he is not in support of building the subway. But what he says in this CP24 interview about never having supported the Scarborough subway is not true: cp24.com/video?clipId=1… /2
Mihevc was involved in early De Baeremaeker/Stintz plan to re-open Transit City's Scarborough LRT. Back then, it was called “OneCity” plan. Mihevc explained his own involvement, as did other councillors, to @jm_mcgrath in this 2012 story (h/t @goldsbie) web.archive.org/web/2012062902… /3
While canvassing with him recently, Mihevc referenced trying to stop Ford from burying the Eglinton LRT and his support for Transit City. It’s true, council did fight to keep that and other lines above ground. They were successful in February 2012: thestar.com/news/gta/2012/… /4
But that success at council was before the OneCity plan was introduced in June 2012. It revived the subway versus LRT debate the majority of council had already won. Transit City was saved . . . and then . . . /5
In this must-read investigation that remains relevant today, @JohnLorinc explains what motivated Stintz and De Baeremaeker – a run for mayor and fear of Ford spacing.ca/toronto/2014/0… /6
The OneCity plan started a ball rolling that resulted in a motion from De Baeremaeker re-opening the decision on the Scarborough LRT. That motion went against council procedure (thestar.com/news/city_hall…). Mihevc and several other left-leaning councillors supported the motion /7
Sources have told me that some on the left believed they needed to support De Baeremaeker, who often voted with them in the Ford era, in order to ensure he was re-elected /8
That May 2013 vote has ultimately led us to where we are today. By October 2013, several councillors, including Mihevc, refused to support $3.56-billion subway and raising $910M from a special property tax levy. By then it was too late. The subway was approved regardless /end
