This is a big deal. Ford government proposes changes to allow municipalities to encourage major business investments in their cities by allowing them to bypass major environmental protections advocates have fought decades for. Big h/t @jm_mcgrath
This appears to essentially be a Trojan horse that would allow Greenbelt development, ignore regulations in place to protect clean drinking water, etc. (there are a lot of other things that etc. doesn't really do justice to nor does this tweet)
This is the part of the Clean Water Act that could be bypassed, basically meaning a development would not have to conform with the plan in place to protect the sources of drinking water
This comes after Ford government got rid of the environment watchdog office.
The Clean Water Act was created as a result of the inquiry into the Walkerton tragedy that claimed the lives of seven people and made many more very sick news.ontario.ca/archive/en/200…
.@envirodefence, in a statement, says Ford government’s new Bill 66 “repudiates Premier Doug Ford’s promise not to touch the Greenbelt, threatens drinking water, undermines evidence-based city planning, and removes protection from toxic chemicals for Ontario residents.”
