By the way, I didn't really focus on this, but having a PhD really can make you overqualified for some jobs. I have seen clear examples of this. I am not saying it's right, okay? I am just saying it is real. So some notion of "do a PhD then get a "regular" job" might not work
In contrast, having a MS is almost always a plus. A MS can make you stand out amongst a stack of BS qualified people in a positive way, whereas having a PhD in the same stack gets your resume directed to the shredder by the wtf.baffled HR person. #facts.
And in the "going straight to the PhD saves time" argument, "time" is fool's gold.
