This is informative, and helpful perspective. But it's a case for recognizing and responding to mass shootings as a distinct problem -- not a rounding error on actuarial spreadsheets that we strangely worry about too much.
Mass shootings are more fruitfully described as a species of terrorism than of general gun violence. And if perspective is always prudent, there's only so much to be had after a terrorist act by pulling out census charts and chiding that more people die of falls from ladders &c.
If we can rightfully scorn the "this is a rounding error" response to a mail-bomb assassination plot (actuarial impact: zero), we ought to be able to muster the same for the now-regular sight of a dozen souls massacred at random, full stop, no division per capita.
