RIP: My trusty Ubuntu based ThinkPad W510 (2010) finally bit the dust yesterday, it just turned off, no turning back on, tried multiple chargers. Even though it weighed nearly 7 pounds and people made fun of me/it in meetings quite frequently, I loved that ThinkPad! 1/
Yesterday my new baby, a 3rd gen ThinkPad X1 Yoga (lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/…) was ordered to replace it, which I have been anticipating getting since the 1st gen model came out years ago. 1/
I will miss my W510's 32GB of RAM & live with the max 16GB soldered RAM with the Yoga, which was my main holdback but the era of containers lessen that need. I also had to sacrifice built in WWAN for the nicer, 500nit display (I guess they couldn't do both). 2/
However, I am really excited to finally have a touchscreen that doesn't have phantom touches (forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-P-…). 3/
I use my touchscreen almost daily to annotate my screen during meetings & I think everyone would benefit from a touchscreen for annotations as wiggling a small mouse cursor isn't nearly as effective as drawing a big red circle around something to bring attention to it! 4/
I'm really interested in having a convertible tablet form factor that has high performance and full functionality behind it and isn't running Android but full strength Linux. 5/
And I haven't yet decided on Ubuntu or Fedora yet, but am leaning towards Ubuntu since it still uses X which may sound like a bad thing but my go to application for screen annotations is Compiz Annotate and it doesn't have a replacement for Wayland yet. 6/
I am however very interested in Fedora 29's Flicker Free Boot (news.ycombinator.com/item?id=181239…) so maybe I can explore getting @fedora 29 working with X by default so I can have the Flicker Free Boot that Linux based desktops have needed for so long. 7/
Overall, it was a bittersweet day yesterday. I am parting with a piece of hardware I have used almost daily for the past 7 years, but welcoming a more modern predecessor that has better display, battery, form factor, USB-C charging and so much more. /end
