Two Presidents died on this day. Modest men from the Midwest, each had been VP for just a few months before ascending to the top job. Harry Truman, the 33d POTUS (1945-53), died in 1972; Gerald Ford, the 38th (1974-77) in 2006
President for just three months when Franklin D. Roosevelt died, Truman became president just as World War II was ending in Europe. He made the grave decision to drop two atomic bombs on Japan, which brought the Pacific war to an end /2

06/01/2019 - 78 years ago today, the longest-serving #UnitedStates #President, #Franklin D. #Roosevelt (#FDR) addressed the 77th #Congress with his "#Four #Freedoms" speech with the intent to shift #US #foreign #policy from that of #neutrality to #interventionist.
#FDR promoted the idea that the people of the world, in all nations, shared entitlement to four freedoms: that of the freedom of speech and expression, the freedom of worship, the freedom from want and the freedom from fear.
#FDR is arguably one of the most 'successful' #US Presidents. Some would argue that on the basis of his numerous social policies such as 'the New Deal'. Others, however, would argue that his role during the second world war was more prevalent to his success & everlasting legacy.

A tradição de gravar álbuns natalinos começou em 1940, com Christmas Music.
Lançado em 78RPM pelo selo inglês Decca Records (criado em 1929 e, atualmente, parte da Universal Music Group).
Eram gravações do final da década de 30, com Bing Crosby e orquestra.
Em 1940, a 2a. Guerra Mundial já estava a pleno vapor na Europa/Africa/Pacífico; os EUA só entraram em 1941, após o ataque a Pearl Harbor.

Desta forma, o 2o. álbum, da mesma Decca Records, só foi lançado em 1945.

As we celebrate #VeteransDay this year, on the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI, I am grateful for the moment to reflect on the veterans I have been blessed to interact with.
Yet these feelings of gratitude and honor we experience for those who have served our country should not be restrained to one day a year. Rather, we should use this day as a reminder to respect these brave men and women and their families through our words and actions every day.
To the roughly 150,000 veterans living in #Utah, thank you, and happy Veterans Day. Please do not hesitate to reach out to my office should you ever be in need of assistance.

My father in law was trained as a Signal Corpsman in World War II. He carried the secret FM crystals which allowed the generals to talk to each other. Because he was usually near the generals, his war career was pretty quiet.
On the other hand, he was always vague about what the protocol was if it looked as if he, and those crystals, were about to fall into enemy hands.

Best to just be grateful it didn't come to that.
My father had a double degree in Classics and Astronomy from Cornell. The year after he graduated, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. This was enough of a shock that American military planes were still pretty antiquated, not ready for long-range combat.
