In Durham, NC, Jose Chicas & Samuel Oliver-Bruno have led our community in learning what it means to be sanctuary when federal immigration enforcement is driven by the politics of fear. Today, our whole community was attacked by ICE. wral.com/dozens-arreste…
At the request of Immigration & Customs, Samuel left the church where he has stayed for nearly a year to attend an appointment. He thought he was in the process of receiving documentation. B/c sanctuary has been his protection, the church & community went with him.
When he entered the office, ICE officers tackled him & drug him to a van behind the building. Clergy led supporters in nonviolent resistance, circling the van & linking arms. 
When asked their reason for this deceptive & violent seizure, this was response from ICE. To be clear, Samuel was there in an attempt to gain “legal basis to remain in the US.” If this is there policy, there are 11 million neighbors in every US community who are in danger.
We need people who are ready to put our bodies on the line for our neighbors, as 27 did spontaneously today. We need local law enforcement ready to join us in moral resistance.
We need political leadership like this from @RepDavidEPrice & @GKButterfield—people who will insist that this is not what our immigration & customs officers swore to do.
Together, we must make sure our neighbors see this violence for what it is. And we must demand its end.
