Let’s be clear - the cowardice in being responsible for a young woman’s death and fleeing to evade justice is repugnant. He deserves - and will receive - suitably condign punishment when he’s caught (and he will be).

But this has nothing to do with legal aid.
The Court of Appeal has only granted legal aid and given permission to appeal against the conviction because it believes that there are arguable grounds that the conviction is unsafe.

Nobody - even people on the run - should be unsafely convicted.

⬇️Even with the new recruits, there are 15% fewer prison officers than in 2010.
If we’re really interested in prison achievements, let’s also add:

🚑 Serious assaults against prison staff have TRIPLED since 2010

🚑 Self-harming in prison has increased by 88% since 2010

👨‍🎓The number of prisoners completing accredited courses is down by 22% since 2015.
📈58% of our prisons are overcrowded.

❌ Sexual assaults in prison have tripled since 2012

📖 The number of English and maths qualifications achieved at level 1 or 2 (GCSE equivalent) has nearly halved since 2012.

☠️ 299 people died in custody in the year to March 2018.

@RossjournoClark has been hawking this same column around for years. It wasn’t true when he started, it’s not true now. I even take the time to deal comprehensively with these claims in my book, which I reproduce here for free.

Firstly, the “most expensive legal aid system” lie:
(continued - the myth of “most expensive legal aid system in the world”). TLDR: The comparator legal systems are completely different. It’s comparing oranges with meerkats.

Learner needs to regard info as important, intriguing, or beautiful. Then deep learning occurs. Learner needs to be in charge of the question. But, few students will not take a deep approach to learning.

Judging from how many people I’ve met who never once heard of it and I needed to explain and educate them, I’ll go with experience that very little have ever heard of it
Which doesn’t surprise me, I mean really because gender is such a social construct, there’s gender identities out there that get unnoticed compared to others, and it’s mostly always non-binary identities, since it goes FAR out more than the binary ones
