I think the greatest benefit of conferences is to get exposed to diverse, unusual ideas, and to talk to people you can't usually meet.

Everything Facebook does, big or small, reflects a complete lack of ethics and an intent to game their way into maximum profits no matter the damage inflicted on the world.

Facebook is Phillip Morris combined with Lockheed Martin, but bigger.

The most frustrating part is that their awfulness is single-handedly destroying the reputation of the tech industry. Please do not compare Facebook to Microsoft, or Amazon, or Google, or Apple. They are in a league of their own. No one else is even 10% as bad, not even Palantir.
At least we'll get one thing out of it: more regulations, and more pressure on everyone else to act ethically. Not a bad thing.

I am very sad at how ineffective reCAPTCHA is at preventing spam bots. Either spammers have developed a well-oiled human-based pipeline for breaking captchas for <<$0.1 each, or they've made a DL-based captcha breaker. In any case, it's free-for-all these days.
For a long time my go-to spam prevention solution was invisible fields like "username", "password" in the registration form -- if you fill them in, you must be a bot. It used to be very effective, but increasingly less so recently, probably because bots are now browser-based.
Now I'm using ad-hoc questions visible to users. Trivial to break if a human were to write a script specific to my forms, but that's not part of my threat profile.

It would be fascinating to instrument deep learning developer workflows, so as to run the numbers on the productivity increase that comes from using tools that reduce cognitive load vs. tools that lay traps for you to fall into
The first thing that users that recently switched to Keras mention to me is the productivity boost. In the time it would have taken them to debug their way through the implementation of one idea (`zero_grad()` anyone?), they can try out 2, 3 ideas.
It matters because trying more ideas (with fewer mistakes) means you will converge faster towards better ideas (thus winning competitions more often or increasing your paper acceptance rate).

I'm thinking Kaggle kernels or Colab would be a way to gather hard data on this...

2/7 The problem with adversarial examples is that they dont look like what they are classified as. Capsule networks output both a classification and a reconstruction of the input conditioned on the classification. A reconstruction of an adversarial looks different from the input
3/7 We can create a detection algorithm by defining a threshold for reconstruction error from a validation set, and flag inputs as adversarial if the reconstruction error exceeds this threshold.

Tips to #conferences offering #diversity tickets (THREAD)

1) Make it clear on your ticketing page that you offer diversity tickets.

2) Be specific about what you are offering e.g. is travel and accommodation incuded?

3) Be clear on how you decide on allocation of tickets.
4) Set expectations on when the applicant can expect a response and in what form.

5) Add your event to diversitytickets.org
6.1) Give applicants a reply ASAP - if it's a NO they may still want to buy a paid ticket during the early bird pricing window

6.2) Give applicants a reply ASAP - if it's a YES they will also need to book travel and accommodation - making them wait exposes them to higher costs
