Meanwhile, other papers might report what Sterling says but they will never, ever, shame the racists, still less those who employ them. In short, they tolerate racism in their industry. When did the press last publish a serious investigation of racism in the press? 2/6
Their London newsrooms tend to be overwhelmingly white – in a city where 40% of the population is not. They will never admit it but in their world the norm is this: white reporters answer to white editors who answer to white proprietors. 3/6
Nor will the 'regulator', IPSO, do anything about what Sterling describes. IPSO was designed by the press industry to be almost useless in the face of racism. In one year it received 8.148 complaints about discrimination – and it upheld just one. byline.com/column/68/arti… 4/6
The papers in question are the same ones the May government is so desperate to please that it pardoned their crimes by cancelling Leveson 2. Executives and editors at some titles actually conspired in crime, theguardian.com/media/2018/feb… but they got away with it. 5/6
To cap it all, the May government now wants to give these papers more subsidies from the public purse – on the grounds that it's vital to protect their 'high quality journalism'. byline.com/column/68/arti… High quality? What do you think? 6/6
