Tory MP says Theresa May has just told them she will resign as PM before the next general election. Some Ministers reported to be in tears inside the committee room.
An ERG Tory asked PM, “What is your longterm intention after March?” This she ducked.

The detail on the Irish backstop:
1. A UK-wide customs union, and no NI-only version (UK win)
2. An independent panel to arbitrate a ‘good faith’ end mechanism (UK win)
3. No backstop end date or time limit (UK loss)
4. Full level playing field rules apply thru out (UK loss)

A. HMG still needs to persuade the EU to accept its UK-wide Irish backstop, and dump their own NI-only version. This also means HMG defining the full UK backstop 2/8
Only half of it - the Temporary Customs Arrangement - is out there so far. What happens to the EU's rules and regulations during the backstop period (ie the very tricky bit for the DUP) is still undeclared 3/8

We seem to be approaching another crunch point in the Brexit negotiations and although I usually try to avoid commenting on them I think I owe it to those I represent to say what I think about the vexed question of the customs union.
In the long term it would be bizarre for a country the size of the UK to have no control over its trade policy. When we leave the EU, we will lose all influence over the EU's trade policy so we must not stay in a customs union with the EU forever.
We need to move towards a new arrangement in which we strike our own trade deals and set our own tariffs. But we should do so in a way that minimises the disruption for leading manufacturers and preserves the Good Friday Agreement.

1. The main reason the Tory right have screwed up Brexit is because they have no ambition apart from a nebulous and meaningless concept of "free trade" which falls over at first exposure to daylight.
2. Secondly, Brexit to them is the end not the means. This explains their hurry to exit. They just want it done and dusted before the next general election and then forget about it. No actual vision of what the UK seeks do actually do outside of the EU.
3. We've heard the timid bleating from Liam Fox at the WTO about leading but with no real idea of how we might do that. All he's done is plucked out the usual mantras coughed up by just about everybody who attends the WTO.
