We let our past prevent us from moving forward by focusing on it.

Things that are beyond our control.
Things that have already happened.
Things that can’t be changed.

There’s a better way...

👇 Thread
When we focus on the past, we hold ourselves back.

We get hung up on mistakes and failures.

The weight of past mistakes make us more conservative and fearful of failure.

We start to make the same mistakes out of fear.
Oftentimes the emotions that were created through our mistakes and failures are what anchor us to the past.

When we think we’re up against familiar circumstances, negative emotions from the past can easily get triggered.
We often distort our perception of the past based on our mindset about it.

In hindsight, we think we could have made better decisions.

Yet oftentimes our experiences helped us learn and grow.

And we wouldn’t be who we are today without our past experiences.
The further you get from your past the smaller and less significant it should feel.

Like watching an object get smaller and smaller in the rearview mirror of your car.

As you move forward, the past should get more distant until it doesn’t affect you anymore.
Instead of focusing on the past, put your attention on the present and the next actions you can take.

Things that you can do right now.
Things that make today and tomorrow better.
Things that move you in the right direction.
Ways to let go of the past:

Notice when you’re using the past to predict future failure.

Write down what happened in the past.

Turn the stories you have about the past into lessons you’ve learned.

Talk to people about your past experiences to get different perspectives.
If the past crosses your mind and makes you nervous, remember that it’s already nothing more than a memory.

It’s done.
It was your yesterday.
Today is here.
Tomorrow is right in front of you.
The more you work towards what’s next, the faster you’ll forget what came before.
Make tomorrow the best it possibly can be by focusing on what to do next instead of what has already happened.
With each new day that comes, make it your goal to be better than you were yesterday.
Spend your time and energy figuring out how to do better instead of worrying about repeating mistakes of the past.
The weight of the past makes it harder to move forward. Once you let it go, you’ll feel open to new possibilities and outcomes.
Use the past to your advantage by reminding yourself that whatever happened should be used to move you forward. Not hold you back.
