Here in downtown court as serial killer Dellen #Millard - who already must wait 50 years before applying for parole - learns today if 3rd murder conviction will carry another consecutive life term.
#Millard has just entered prisoner's box with his usual creepy smile. Looking around the packed courtroom, same medicine pouch around his neck and braid behind his ear.
Not clear what's so amusing as #Millard facing 75 years before applying for parole - ie. never.
Justice Maureen Forestell may choose to sentence #Millard to concurrent life term for killing his father and making it look like a suicide, rather than consecutive, as previous judge did for murders of Tim Bosma and Laura Babcock
Justice Forestell now reading her decision re sentencing for Wayne Millard. She mentions that Justice Code ruled that 2nd life term for Babcock murder be served consecutively, so #Millard not eligible to apply until 77 yrs old.
Murders were "clearly separate and distinct," judge says and question is whether combined sentence will be "unduly harsh." #Millard
#Millard is staring us down with smile as judge reads decision
Vengeance has no place in sentencing but retribution and denunciation do, to reflect "moral culpability of the offender" and deter others #Millard
Judge: #Millard shot his sleeping father through the eye, arranged an alibi. His lawyer says she shouldn't consider the other 2 murders against him. She disagrees, He committed 3 planned and deliberate murders in less than a year.
Two of his 3 victims were vulnerable: Laura Babcock was dealing with mental health issues, his father was weak and old. #Millard
#Millard has used his ability to gain trust for repeated, planned and deliberate killings. Chances of rehabilitation "so faint"
#BREAKING - Judge sentences #Millard to 3rd consecutive life term. Will have to serve 75 yrs before parole - he'll be 102 yrs old
"It is not unduly long and harsh" she says as he smiles and looks up at the ceiling #Millard
Applause in the courtroom as #Millard is handcuffed and taken away
A 75-year parole ineligibility is a record sentence in Ontario #Millard
