DC’s Clucking Class is up in arms over Trump’s decision on Syria.

Here’s why this former CIA officer thinks they’re all wrong (again).

(Thread 1/7)
Our goals in Syria are to 1) materially degrade ISIS in order to 2) help restore governance.

Goal One has been achieved.

Trump’s gamble is that Russia, Iran, & Turkey will keep it that way, paving the path to Goal Two.

AKA Victory through their blood, their treasure.

Not ours
To minimize rollback of Goal One, Trump must:

1) Maintain network of informants
2) Monitor threats
3) Neutralize new threats

We do the latter with a mix of airstrikes, covert action, & alliance w/ Turkey & Iraq.

Trump & his team know this. Esp the importance of Turkey/Iraq.
Relations w/ these two nations currently stink. We’ve trained, armed, & funded a group that they don’t like: the Kurds.

Turks view them as terrorists. Iraqis worry about a breakaway Kurdish Republic.

Trump’s withdrawal is thus a change of strategy.

Kurds out, Turkey/Iraq in.
You can be outraged that Trump is abandoning these brave men that we’ve trained to do our ISIS dirty work.

That’s fair.

Trump has a moral obligation to take care of them. They’re owed a fighting chance at life.

State, CIA, & DoD can ensure such is done. But it will take POTUS.
DC Cluckers are also making a lot of noise about how Trump is helping Iran & Russia.

Remember: our goal in Syria isn’t to weaken Iran or humiliate Russia.

We take those fights elsewhere. Like rolling back Iran nuc deal or sanctions against Russia.

Trump & his team know this.
Bottom line: Foreign policy is a game of chess.

Trump’s withdrawal is a reasonable, if risky, move. It pushes the remaining ISIS cleanup to others & strengthens our ties to Turkey & Iraq for future chess moves.

Ignore the DC Cluckers who argue otherwise.

Esp Mika Brzezinski.
