Despite these “improvements” Facebook still does not let its users persistently opt-out of ads that target them by dangerous inferences or by uploaded personal data. This is still a farce. Do more. facebook.com/business/news/…
I won’t be satisfied until Facebook gives you this option:

☑️Hide all ads from advertisers who upload my personal information to target me personally.

Realize I’m being supremely generous by not insisting this be checked by default.

There’s no way a Facebook user can protect themselves from a rogue agent, foreign or domestic, until FB kills Custom Audiences or severely curtails its implementation. Opting out is a Sisyphean task. You’ll find it buried in “advertisers I’ve interacted with” Get ready to click.

The paper of record missed the story of 2016. Neither the Washington Post nor the Wall Street Journal picked up the slack. The Grey Ladies failed spectacularly. They were all drunk on the horse race. They will be drunk on horse racing again in 2020.
The free press is essential to democracy but it must drop its stubborn yet profitable horse-race view-from-nowhere habit. This business model has been hacked by our adversaries. Get woke or be stupid.
Maybe I hammer the Grey Ladies so hard because they refuse to cover my consequential Cambridge Analytica legal work? I win a guilty plea but not a word of coverage by NYT, WaPo, WSJ. Yet basically all other news orgs will cover my efforts. It’s a very weird feeling.

The best part of targeted advertising for your favorite brands is knowing your private data is helping your favorite brands save money targeting you to manipulate you to spend more of your money for your favorite brand to target you for more advertising.

The New York Times never would’ve reported on Cambridge Analytica if The Guardian wasn’t under legal assault from SCL’s lawyers. A US partner was needed.

The New York Times closed out the campaign with headlines that Trump Russia was a non-story and Clinton emails still were.
The problem with having a paper of record is having a paper of record.
We shouldn’t wait for The New York Times to decide. But we do. And we will.

UCC had opportunity to comment on the #Data.Protection & Privacy Bill. The enactment of this law is long overdue. A comprehensive law on the collection & processing personal information gives effect to the right to Privacy envisaged under Article 27(2) of the Constitution
UCC welcome the protections offered by the Bill in terms of export of data, breach notification requirements, data subjects access rights, automated decision making, compensation and the right to be forgotten and provision for financial and penal sanctions for breach of the law.
Distinction between Data collectors & data controllers.
The Bill should however clarify & distinguish Data Collectors, from Data Processors & Data Controllers. Clause 2 is inconsistent with international good practice which provides for two broad categories of Data Controllers

Facebook is confronting EU users a new “terms of service” dialogue that denies access until a user opt-ins to tracking for ad targeting, and various other data processing purposes...
These Terms refer to the “data policy” that says “we use the information we have about you – including information about your interests, actions and connections – to select and personalise ads, offers and other sponsored content that we show you.”

An interesting deep dive history of the phrase “if you’re not paying for something, you’re not the customer, you’re the product,” which today is used of Facebook, but far predates it. I was surprised to learn that I played a role in popularizing the phrase slate.me/2Kkmrw5
There’s a lot more than the history of the phrase in this piece, though. Here’s one tidbit: "If anything, Facebook’s mistake in the Cambridge Analytica case was that it failed to treat users’ data as a valuable product."
Another gem: "'You are the product' paints us as powerless pawns in Facebook’s game but gives us no leverage with which to improve our predicament."
