Un-Christmassy thread alert: I know it's the season of goodwill but the Guardian's reporting on Corbyn/Brexit is...not great. First, they turn an interview about homelessness into an "exclusive" that Labour would try for a softer Brexit than the Tories after a snap election.
For months Labour have said they want to remove the Tory govt & negotiate a deal securing a permanent customs union & SM access. If they can't make good on that, Labour will need to decide whether to push for softest possible Brexit or hold another referendum w/Remain on ballot.
Corbyn tells Guardian that the _party_ would need to decide its election policy, but that personally he'd expect to negotiate a much softer Brexit than May's dire deal. Cue a tirade from militant celebrity-remainers, including a Vogon-like Nativity parody from JK Rowling.
Then the Guardian runs the inevitable follow-up piece reporting on the furious liberal reaction to their ‘scoop’. Bafflingly, in this piece they insist that Corbyn would campaign for Leave in a referendum. (Something he didn’t say in the initial article.) theguardian.com/politics/2018/…
And they run the usual anti-Corbyn quote from Chuka Umunna, including an impassioned defence of immigrants from someone who has much more to answer for on the immigrant-bashing front than Corbyn. (And a man who used to call a second referendum "elitist".)
I appreciate that passions are running high, but whatever your feelings about Corbyn it can't be good politics for Labour to commit to reversing Brexit before any attempt on their part to negotiate a far closer relationship than the one Theresa May has been peddling.
And given toxic mood in Britain & truly disastrous effects of 2016 referendum, it would be a colossal gamble to place all hopes of avoiding a hard Brexit on another referendum. But on this front it seems that it's the liberals rather than the left who are the real "ideologues".
A distinctly unseasonal thread, so let me finish with some bored cats in front of a Christmas tree.
