So many great panels at #CSPC2018 right now on #scicomm and #scienceliteracy, but my choice is clear... Attending the @FRQ_NT panel on #EDI that includes both Anne Webb @NSERC_CRSNG and our first of 2 co-presidents @DSP_SPE panelists today, @maryrosebgill!

@maryrosebgill was the lead on the @DSP_SPE consultation on breaking gender barriers in STEM ➡️ Check out the report here 📎sp-exchange.ca/news/Breaking_…
Fanny Eugène from @FRQ_NT organized this panel and presents the projects at #FRQ @SciChefQC and the SAGA model
#CSPC2018 Shirley Malcom @aaas is on the board of SAGA and presents the US model @SeaChangeProg (based on @Athena_SWAN). They look at intersectionality, not walk away from it. It's about fixing the system, not the people.
Anne Webb presents @NSERC_CRSNG's vision on #EDI working towards a made-in-Canada @Athena_SWAN #CSPC2018

In most disciplines, most fields have not seen much change in diversity in 20 years. We can't demarginalize groups field by field, it needs to be a all-inclusive strategy
⬇️ These are the factors and steps @NSERC_CRSNG is taking into account for #EDI #policy, into its action plan. This isn't an add-on, this plan is being designed for lasting impact

#CSPC2018
VP Equity and Community Inclusion @RyersonU @Diversity_Blog presents their university model for #EDI = proudly diverse, intentionally inclusive. #CSPC2018
To bring #equity professionals to the #EDI conversation, @Diversity_Blog had to both make space and bring her own chair to the table.

This rings true for all communities that aren't included in discussions where they are stakeholders. The @DSP_SPE team has a lot to say abt that!
#CSPC2018 @maryrosebgill presents the mandate of @DSP_SPE and some of our work in representing students in #scipol, and our work on #EDI via the SPE café model and through consultations

#CSPC2018 @DocTrott asks about accountability. What can we do to make sure institutions are held accountable? @Diversity_Blog says our govt has influence as a higher body to request and enforce strategies from universities, and the reputation hit is a strong force as well.
Shirley Malcom @aaas says external forces are useful, particularly what affects reputation. Trustees and funders are paying attention. But, scientists often care more what their discipline thinks about them, than their institution. @aaas now revokes fellow status where necessary.
#EDI Q from a white guy #CSPC2018 - bystander training is also important, so that those not part of visible minorities are not being viewed as part of the problem but part of the solution. And can we expect to move the needle if we are fighting against a sea of toxic masculinity
Shirley Malcom @aaas gives an example of a minority student whose PI becomes a problem due to toxic masculinity... There can be uncontrolled abuse of power. If we can disrupt this and provide options, we are moving the needle systematically & significantly 👏👏👏

#CSPC2018 #edi
#CSPC2018 #EDI @Diversity_Blog adds that it's about power toxicity, not just toxic masculinity. This is about being inclusive and preventing abuse in the broad sense.
#CSPC2018 #EDI Q from a #CRC at @WesternU, is there a plan in the Canadian @Athena_SWAN and in @SeaChangeProg to enforce having #edi measures tied to funding?
Shirley Malcom specifies that SEA Change is @aaas, not in govt. There are limits to that power. But, they can affect behaviour of private funders.

By using the competitiveness of institutions to obtain accreditation, we can have strong impact.

#CSPC2018 #EDI
Anne Webb @NSERC_CRSNG says they are not currently looking to tie #EDI requirements to funding for the initial 5 year pilot based on @Athena_SWAN. They are still consulting though, and it's a work in progress #CSPC2018
#EDI Q #CSPC2018 - when talking about data science, the #HQP pool is small and not diverse at all. How do we promote diversity at that level. Maryse Lassonde @FRQ_NT says other countries have HQP that may help bring diversity.
Shirley Malcom @aaas adds undergrads are sometimes more diverse (generally, the lower you go the more diverse). Pulling them up as a cohort, not as tokens, can drive #diversity quickly. #CSPC2018 #edi
#CSPC2018 #EDI @maryrosebgill @DSP_SPE adds more opportunity for grad students from other faculties to do data science courses can help diversity AND those students who need data science skills for their careers and research projects 👏👏👏
Q from Canadian Space Agency, saying they would be willing to set aside funds to drive #EDI goals... What are the gaps, where can they help? Malcom @aaas says momey is needed everywhere! Fund post-docs, students that show excellence and wouldn't be recognized otherwise! #CSPC2018
