1. The Case For “The Wall”

“The Wall” is a metaphor for a robust fence that, when combined with practicable monitoring and patrolling, is impenetrable enough to act as a robust deterrent against anyone who tries to breach it.
2. The case for funding such a barrier is distilled in this mainstream media report.
3. First and foremost, the purpose of such a barrier is, and has to be, the elimination of untold human misery, on both sides of the border, caused by the hope of illegal entry into the U.S. by those who are desperate enough to risk it.
4. Second, whatever solution we come up with has to be humane and sustainable at an affordable cost.
5. If money were no object, people who are most familiar with the details of what’s going at our border with Mexico, and who are capable of an objective perspective on the issue, say there are only two robust ways to avoid the tragedies at the border.
6. One way is to make the border open to anyone who wants to walk in. The other is to have a robust barrier so practically no one can get in illegally and everyone has to come in through legal channels.
7. Now letting anyone walk in through the border is not sustainable at all. No matter how wealthy and prosperous America gets, there are finite limits to how many immigrants the country can absorb without going broke or seriously jeopardizing the well-being of American citizens.
8. The half-measures we currently have cause the greatest tragedies. Migrants suffer immeasurably in making the perilous journey to enter the border illegally. Many die on the way. According to some reports, 70% of young girls and women get raped along the way, multiple times.
9. On the U.S. side, migrants take an enormous toll on resources by draining scarce welfare, housing, healthcare, and education dollars in disproportionate numbers. And the criminal elements wreak havoc on many families, and are a drain on our law enforcement and justice systems.
10. So the only tenable and sustainable solution is to eliminate the temptation of illegal entry into the U.S. by making our border highly secure. Plugging the tragic route will allow our resources to be better utilized in more efficiently processing the genuine asylum seekers.
11. We should also create an efficient system to grant and enforce temporary work permits to better accommodate economic and workforce needs on both sides of the border. Let us work on solutions and get over the lunacy of hyper-partisanship on an issue of utmost import.

The End
To paraphrase David Harsanyi: Is it more immoral to preemptively dissuade illegal immigrants from illegally crossing the border with a wall than to allow them to wander around in deserts and wilderness looking for water on their own?
"The reason a secure border wall has not been built is not apprehension that it would not work, but rather real fear that it would work only too well." -- Victor Davis Hanson
Many liberal journalists complain that Trump only cares about a wall. But if they would actually take the trouble to read the proposal he sent to Congress on January 6, they would see that he seeks the following things in addition to 234 miles of physical barrier:
A great accounting of media's unhinged and deceitful reaction to Trump's speech last night about the urgent need to fund border security. Thank you @MZHemingway.

Pompous demagoguery about how the wall is just a vanity project for Trump is awfully easy. Coping with the reality of illegal immigration in the trenches is awfully hard. Hear how the Democratic strategy impacts the underprivileged in Watts, East LA, etc.
