Trump beat the stuffing out of them last night. Pay no attention to the future utterances of any analyst who claims otherwise.

In fact, the usual dreary shutdown theatrics make the Dems the safer bet to win the skirmish. They only need to shake a few Repubs loose, and some of them are eager to be shaken. Shutdown panic hits the Beltway harder and faster than public concern about border security.
But over the longer term, Trump laid down a very effective roadmap for pressing the border issue. I'd wager more than one Republican politician is stunned by how effective Trump's approach has proven against Democrats in only a single day.
This was supposed to be a huge blunder by Trump, a field day for Democrats, a feeding frenzy for DNC Media "fact checkers." That's not what happened AT ALL. Trump's little eight-minute speech flummoxed the "experts" more than anything since winning the 2016 election.
Watching Democrats back nervously away from an issue they thought they owned, and begin frantically looking for a way to change the subject, is remarkable - but it won't count for much if the opportunity is not pursued by Republicans. They're not usually good at that. /end
