Thread: For those of you wondering why I still feel for Hardik Pandya inspite of having absolutely no doubt that he deserves to be disciplined for his indiscretion, first & foremost do read Joy Gupta's well-tempered piece here: espncricinfo.com/story/_/id/257…
Here is a man who clearly lacks the sensibilities, and by his own admission, certainly the intellect to distinguish between what he considers cool machismo chat and outright misogynistic conduct. Yes he shoulder's most of the blame, and he should, but no one helped his cause..
Not his Board who hardly spend any time training these boys on media etiquette, or allow them the chance to get comfortable with media interviews with sports journos, and now seem to be shocked he showed up at KWK at all, apparently without permission..
Not his agency, who inspite of knowing the lack of filter Hardik possesses & what he's capable of, decided to have him on a show as provocative as KWK without prepping him well enough, and with no intention of having the final cut revised once they knew all that he had said
And most certainly not Karan Johar, who welcomes, smirks at, and shamelessly encourages anything that he believes would add spice to his self-indulgent chat show, inspite of pretending to stand by feminist values and equality when it suits him. The show wanted this to come out.
And of course, I don't hold Johar or his producers to any reasonably high standard of moral propriety. Even a reputable network like Star missed out on the chance to filter out the nonsense, though they have learned their lesson eventually (hotstar has pulled down the episode)
But all these forces came together to ensure the worst of Hardik Pandya was paraded for everyone to take gleeful delight in deriding. No one wanted to spare him the embarrassment, on the contrary they wanted all of it on display, because, hey, it's good for the show right..
Yes, Hardik has paid the price for his own stupidity, and he will rightfuly face the consequences like he should, as will his teammate for being collateral damage. I have no doubt they will both learn from this. I just hope a lot more people do.
