Do you remember the tale of Kevin Brewer from last year? He was the man who created companies in politicians' names (@JamesCleverly and @vincecable) to show them how easy it was to use a UK company to commit fraud, was prosecuted as a result and left £22,000 the poorer. 1/n
The government was pretty psyched about the case (though went mysteriously quiet when people realised what had really happened). 2/n gov.uk/government/new…
The government's own anti-corruption tsar @JohnPenroseNews was very critical of the case, as quoted in my own article about it here. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
Anyway, despite the storm of negative publicity, Kevin Brewer's conviction stood, and he's paying off his fine £1,000 a month, including a "victim surcharge" despite there not being any victim to what was barely a crime.
To earn the money to pay his fine, Brewer needs to make a profit from his company National Business Register LLP, which forms companies for its clients and (unlike companies house) has to do anti-money laundering due diligence on the people he works with. start.biz
Companies House has, however, removed National Business Register from its list of company formation agents on its web site, thanks to Brewer having been convicted after blowing the whistle on how easy it is to commit fraud via companies house. gov.uk/government/pub…
This is costing Brewer significant business, and he complained. However, the reply came back that there would be no restoration to the list (quote from the email that Brewer received).
Look at the list, and you'll find A1 Company Services, which sold Paul Manafort Pompolo Ltd; you'll find Formations House of 29 Harley Street, which you can read about in my article here. theguardian.com/business/2016/…
It is to simply wrong that Companies House would list formation agents that have created companies for some of the biggest crooks in the world, and yet refuse to list the business of a man who tried to expose its own wrong-doing. This is vindictive, and I hope it reconsiders.
