As I hit my 100th hour of working on tasks related to the @LSSOnt tuition and debt report, all of which has been unpaid (and, in fact, I've used my own (LOC) money to fund our survey platform each month), I reflect on today's Tory tuition announcement. I am utterly devastated. 1/
Every day, on top of my studies and three part-time jobs, I spend several hours working on the tuition issue. I spend even more time wondering how I can do better. I lose sleep thinking I may never see any change as a result of these efforts. But I usually still have hope. 2/
I do the work because I want students to have prosperous careers in their preferred area of law without worrying about how they'll pay their rent, or whether they'll eventually have to move into the private sector. I want graduates to not have to worry about going bankrupt. 3/
I want students from different socio-economic backgrounds to be able to come to law school in the first place. I want there to be no such thing as education "sticker shock." Everyone wins when we have diverse students studying law. No one wins when we maintain the status quo. 3/
But the Tory tuition "plan" is not even the status quo. It's worse. It's regressive. It's a complete disservice to students province-wide, so no, it is most certainly not #forthepeople. 4/
We, the students, have to organize against this. We have to take the data that is about to be released in the LSSO report and use it as evidence that investing in students is investing not only in their education, but in their family, mental health, and career prospects. 5/
Even more than that, an investment in students -- law students -- is an investment in the justice system. It's an investment in the province and the country at large. Any "plan" that takes away from that... well, let's just say it's the worst idea I've heard in a long time. 6/
I'm going to keep working. I know there are many others out there who are doing the same: students, lawyers, and politicians alike (well, that last one is a hard maybe). The @LSSOnt is soon to partner with @B2Excellence to host a Bencher candidate debate on the tuition issue. 7/
And so I hope that if anything good comes out of today's announcement, it's that everyone becomes even more committed to the project of decreasing/stabilizing tuition (using the right methods, this time). Because it's not just about money. It's about investing in our future. 8/
