We need to do a better job training PhDs and faculty in project management. Most PhDs end up managing complex projects (large research grants, education programs, departments) but have little training in the practical tools to do it, so muddle along (but could do it much better)
Suggested topics: the right staff for a project (and hiring/managing); how to make and monitor timelines and tasks; managing finances and budgets; strategic planning (e.g. 3 yr, 1 yr, monthly); managing data and file structures; effective meetings (and working outside meetings)
