Alampur Temple Diaries -2

#walktotemple
#Bharatiyavastukala

Continuing with the Nava Brahma temples, the next one was
4. Garuda Brahma Temple
Built between 848-891 CE during the time of Vijayaditya.
Pillared mandapa leading into the temple.
The dwara palakas at the entrance.
The board says Ganga and Yamuna are on either side. But if it is Ganga & Yamuna, y r they holding a vinjamara like an attendant? Correct me if I am wrong experts.
I liked the Gandharvas floating above and the latticed windows.
Garuda above the Garbagriha doorway.
The wonderful layered sculpture and Gandharvas on either side of an elephant.
These blocks below the niches also are carved. Here Yakshas and Kinnaras are carved.
5. Kumara Brahma Temple

This temple was probably built during the time of Vikramaditya, 655-681 CE.
The outer walls don't have much carving, but the pillars in front are carved.
Carving on the outer pillars.
Floral carving on the ceiling. This design is in almost all the Nava Brahma temple ceiling.
Mayura and floral designs on the inner pillars.
6. Arka Brahma Temple

This temple is completely ruined. All sculpture has been destroyed.

Second pic has some inscriptions which I couldn't understand.
7. Veera Brahma Temple

On the vimana we can see a Nataraja sculpture. This temple also has been badly damaged.

Dwarapalakas at the entrance and Ganga and Yamuna on either side.

Beheaded Nandi. This really pained me. How could anyone be so cruel?
Naga on the ceiling. This was in another 1 or 2 temples.
A pillar with a Kalash.
Inscriptions in Kannada/Telugu on the outer wall.
8. Vishwa Brahma Temple

This temple, atleast parts of the temple sculpture was visible.
Dwarapalakas, Ganga &Yamuna destroyed. Gandharvas on top remain. The other Murthis I couldn't make out.
Stone blocks with Yakshas & Kinnaras.
In this temple wall, almost all pillars in niches have Kalash and Kirtimukha.
@gurichopra @Gopanarya @_ugra_ could you tell me what this sculpture signifies? Is it Shiva on Nandi?
The flowers on the latticed windows are very pretty.
2nd pic is destruction. But window is pretty.
Murti of Shiva similar to Swarga Brahma Temple, equally destroyed.

2nd pic, Kalash, geese and flowers on pillars. Ladies amidst trees.

3rd pic, dancers between trees. Btw, what are the creatures climbing the trees? Can anyone recognise them? Mayura & Kinnaras on pillars.
1st pic looks like scenes from Ramayan.
2nd pic, second block looks like Hanuman.
3rd pic, Yakshas, soldiers and dancers.
4th pic, Yakshas, creature a combine of goat, horse & snake. Can it be called a Yali?
Interior ceiling design of Naga & Flower and carvings on pillars.
Then went to the ASI museum which is small but has some wonderful pieces of art recovered from the site.
Mahishasura mardini 11th century.
Bhairava 10, 11th century
Lakulisa 11, 12th century
Naga
@brakoo I remembered your interest in Lakulisa when I saw this.
Trying to decipher this panel.
First part must be Pashupati, lord of animals. Don't know the 2nd.
3rd is Shiva Parvati with Nandi being worshipped.
4th is a fight between 2 people. It could be the episode of Shiva as a tribal and Arjuna, both trying to kill a boar.
This panel I am clueless.
1st pillar, middle sculpture in lower row is Trivikrama.
2nd pillar, middle sculpture in lower row is Narasimha killing Hiranyakashipu.
This must have been a ceiling panel.
Center is Nataraja with Gandharvas above him.
He is surrounded by the Asta Dikpalas.
An ancient inscription.
Overall thankful to ASI for saving these beautiful remnants.
9. Taraka Brahma Temple.

This is where a mosque was built on a temple. Don't know how long ago it had happened but we went into that compound. To our right we saw this ruined temple. It is not the temple on which the mosque is built. That is to the left.
Apart from the occupied part, the temple has two floors. It has inscriptions on the pillars.
Though Shivalinga is no longer there, felt good seeing Kamakshi Devi being worshipped in a small enclosure.
Thus ended my Nava Brahma temples visit. Beautiful but heartbreaking too.

There is more from Alampur. Those who enjoyed these two threads will surely enjoy those too.
@_ugra_ Any idea about this panel?
