A lot of GOP primary voters frankly just wanted someone who was happy to be a jerk. Trump gave them that.
Hey, remember how Mitt Romney's "self-deport" comment freaked everyone out? Remember how Republicans scolded him for it after he lost?

Remember that "autopsy" about reaching out to minorities?
Hey, remember how Ari Fleischer used to criticize Trump?
And so, for the sake of the party, the Never-Trumpers believe, there's going to have to be a lot of pain. Losing 40 seats and the House, in this view, was a good start.

This is 100 percent a lie.

Trump said he would demand a one-time payment of $5-10 billion. It’s still on his campaign web site.
There was also this “Day 1” promise of a new rule that would tax remittances to coerce Mexico into paying.

I was pool on day one. All that happened was that we were told that Trump had had the biggest inauguration crowd in the history of inaugurations.
