1. There’s a certain complexity & murkiness to what is essentially a stand-off within the ruling party, ZANU PF. November 2017 was easier since a military operation was given a veneer of legitimacy by a political operation through parliament. The terrain is very different.
2. We warned after November 2017 that it was a dangerous precedent given the truism that coups beget coups. They gave a licence to soldiers that it’s possible and legitimate to grab power as long as there was something to sanitise it. Our situation is delicate & requires caution.
3. The opposition has to assess its role in a different & more nuanced way than it did in 2017. Then it was used & very swiftly dumped by ZANU PF. To all, it’s safety first. This is a high-stakes game of thrones. If they say stay at home or find sanctuary somewhere, please do so.
4. The regional body, SADC and the AU must wake up and show some leadership. Some of us have raised hue and cry over this crisis for some time now. It shouldn’t be ignored. It’s a hot potato yes but someone must handle it or cool it down. Already some families are starving.
