So, use one grossly authoritarian but technically hopeless and ineffective policy proposal to finance another?
Obviously this idea is absurd and offensive on non-technical grounds, but: Did she consult ANY technical people about this? It wouldn’t work, but you’d have to fundamentally cripple the machine being sold to even seriously TRY to make it work.
You have to effectively deny the owner admin access to their own machine to make this anything more than a speedbump. Which, even if you have no interest in porn, means you’re buying a broken computer.

Blaming “Google” or “Facebook” for journalism’s problems is a lot line blaming Craigslist: The fundamental problem is the Internet making some aspect of the traditional business model unviable; the company’s more messenger than cause.
If Craig Newmark had decided to sell yoga pants for a living, it would still be ludicrous to think classified ads & personals would stay bundled to newspapers, a phenomenon completely tied to the economics of newsprint & physical distribution.
You can point to specific things Facebook in particular did that probably made things worse. But the core problems are a function of the disappearance on economic & technical constraints on information consumption. Breaking up FB doesn’t bring those back.

Does WhatsApp implement perfect forward secrecy? If not, and if Stone had messages set to disappear, might be more fruitful to pick up the traffic on an intercept, then pull the local key from the device.
That’s not a rhetorical question—I assume someone knows & can answer in less time than it’d take me to hunt down specs for the app...

Most interesting thing to my mind in the Stone indictment: There’s a direct quote where Stone asks to move a sensitive conversation to an encrypted channel, but all the other references are to plaintext e-mails or SMS conversations.
Obvious question: Did Mueller have access to Stone’s WhatsApp messages or other encrypted channels? One obvious reason to lie about whether he had written comms with Corsi or Credico would be to forestall a subpoena or warrant for those comms.
This *implies* that they did, or at least learned the substance of the WhatsApp communication, but seems conspicuously vague about how, relative to other descriptions. We go from the specific “texted” or “sent an e-mail” to the more nebulous “told.”

One of the main challenge of building software community for open source software in non technical domain is that most volunteer developers require support first with how to use the tools that make the software in question.
Then the functional domain itself requires the support. But by the time one reaches this stage most of the volunteers feel it is too hard or even loose interest.
Most such software teams have limited funds, they rather use on making their users/implementers happy rather than volunteer developers.

UK politicians - mainly Tory - have failed to understand that Brexit/A50 isn't a transactional "do this, get that" exercise in bartering and it never could be. Even if it were, May and her team went with an adversarial approach, playing to the Express/Mail gallery. ➡️
A50 was always going to played by the rules of the 'club' that the UK wanted to leave, which is basically working out how the UK would leave in accordance with its treaty obligations. And there's no "give to get" wiggle room in that. Nor should there be. ➡️
