Irish government spokesman says it serves no purpose to speculate about what happens with the border in the event of a no deal Brexit and says it's up to UK to come up with alternatives to avoid hard border if withdrawal agreement rejected.
"We're not putting up border infrastructure," spokesman adds.
"There are no preparations for a hard border."
Asked if Irish government could ignore an EU order to put up border infrastructure in the event of no deal Brexit, a spokesman says: "That may involve difficult conversations at that time." 👀

1. For a while it very seriously looked like aircraft would be grounded in the event of a no deal #Brexit. Looking at the legalities, it was a reasonable assumption to make. There are, however, contingency measures. (Thread)
2. This is not to say that we are out of the woods. In the EU's own words, "These measures will only ensure basic connectivity and in no means replicate the significant advantages of membership of the Single European Sky."
So what is "basic connectivity"?...
3. This means only the basic four of the "nine freedoms". This means UK airlines will be able to overfly airspace of Member States, make landings for technical purposes and fly passengers from UK directly to destinations within EU, and pick up passengers headed back to the UK.

Watching today's PMQs I cannot believe this story isn't the headline everywhere, on every news program & newspaper

The UK Prime minister is blackmailing the country with her #Brexit deal, and we're letting it happen

2) repeatedly in PMQs the PM was asked "will you rule out the chaos of No Deal" & her only response was "if you dont like it, vote for my deal"

No discussion, no other options. Deal held back deliberately for no reason other than to scare MPs & the country into submission
3) this is outrageous, it's a complete contempt of democratic principles. By a PM who has the absolute thinnest mandate possible.

Never elected in her own party, lost majority in a GE, propped up with a cash bribe to the DUP, with a deal that's universally hated.

Before this week's #Brexit shenanigans, I said this:

"With May as Prime Minister there can be no Brexit deal"

I stand by that statement

I see no way that the #EUCO - ongoing as I write this thread - can give May anything that'll appease the Brexit hard liners in her party

🇪🇺 is not going to make the backstop time limited or allow 🇬🇧 to unilaterally withdraw it. So the deal on the table is essentially unchanged
The Tories reaching across the political divide to Labour still looks like a ridiculously long shot as well:

1. This is a particularly boring thread but if this doesn't make the point about a no deal #Brexit then nothing will. It relates to an obscure story in the @FarmersGuardian last August and a blunder by the EU Commission.
2. The European Commission failed to re-authorise the Red Tractor assurance scheme, along with four different schemes from other member states, despite the application for re-approval being lodged six months prior.
3. The unexplained gaffe meant farmers whose grain was destined for the biofuels market were been left in the lurch, with some having to fork out for interim storage. No paperwork or tick in a box equals no trade. That's how the system works.
