According to reports it is expected that today @POTUS Trump will recognize @jguaido as interim President of #Venezuela after he is sworn in following the Venezuelan constitution. I explain why. 1/x
Article 233 of the Venezuelan constitution specified that in the absence of a president elect, the president of the National Assembly becomes the interim president and should call to elections within 30 days 2.x
Maduro won elections in May for his 2nd term that started on January 10. But the elections weren’t free nor fair (and most countries don’t recognize them) and he was sworn in by the (loyal-to-him) Supreme Court and not the National Assembly as states in Constitution 3.x
Thus, in January 10 there was no president elect and @jguaido as President of the National Assembly could/should/must become interim President 4.x
By doing this Trump opens the door for the Venezuelan opposition to represent the State in the US, including having an ambassador, dealing with bond holders, etc. 5.x
Big and courageous move by the Trump admin which I believe helps Venezuelans to regain their democracy and freedom x.x
